Mayors for Peace Internship FY2024

Mayors for Peace implemented the Mayors for Peace Internship for overseas member cities over two weeks, from June 19 to July 2024. Two officials from the City of Sarajevo (an Executive City of Mayors for Peace and the Lead City for Bosnian members) and the City of Tasman participated.

1 The period of the Program
From June 19 (Wed.) to July 3 (Wed.), 2024

2 Contents of the Program
・Engage in the duties of the Mayors for Peace Secretariat (including posting information on social media and collecting signatures calling for all states to sign the TPNW as soon as possible)
・Learn about the realities of the atomic bombings (including a visit to the Peace Memorial Museum, hibakusha testimony, and participation in Atomic Bomb Memoir Readings)
・Learn about initiatives to promote peace (including an overview of Mayors for Peace and Hiroshima City’s peace initiatives)

Upon completing the internship program, they shared the following comments:

Mr. Harun Pašić from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, said: “I have never been so filled with pride as I was in Hiroshima. Mayors for Peace fascinated me, how determined they are to establish all-round ties of cooperation with the world, all in building peace between nations and nuclear disarmament.”

Ms. Iuliia Panfylova from Tasman District, New Zealand, said: “I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn first-hand about the horrific event that happened 79 years ago on August 6. For all those children who died, for all those who survived I will be promoting peace in the world through my work back home in New Zealand.”
