Mayors for Peace

24th of October, International Day of United Nations, the organization Mayors for Peace was awarded with the XXXII Prize for Peace 2011 that the United Nations Association of Spain give with the support of the Barcelona Provincial Council.

Mayors for Peace is a worldwide organization that is chaired by the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and includes more than 5.000 cities around the world in order to work for peace, disarmament and, especially elimination of nuclear weapons.

More than 300 Spanish cities are members; where more than 200 are from Catalonia and 120 are from the province of Barcelona. Since 2005, Granollers has been a member of Mayors for Peace and, since 2009, is an executive city and Mayor Josep Mayoral is one of the vice presidents of Mayors for Peace.

This award highlights the value and awareness of work for the elimination of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear. For years, Mayors for Peace has been working to achieve a world free of nuclear threats by 2020, so that the tragedy suffered by the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will never be repeated again.

The United Nations Association of Spain (ANUE) raised thirty-two years ago to establish an award to recognize “an individual or collective work, a personal career or an organization that spread praise and purposes contained in the Charter of the United Nations.” The award includes a prize of 18,000 € provided by the Barcelona Provincial Council and each year this is granted on October 24th, to commemorate the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations in 1945.
