Mayors for Peace awarded the Awards Gernika for Peace and Reconciliation 2010 from the City of Gernika-Lumo, Spain

In recognition of huge achievements to arouse international public opinions for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of lasting world peace through its global peace promoting efforts such as the 2020 Vision Campaign, Mayors for Peace was granted with the Awards Gernika for Peace and Reconciliation 2010.

On behalf of Mayors for Peace, the Mayor of Granollers (Spain), Vice President of Mayors for Peace attended the awards ceremony.

1. Outline of the Awards Gernika for Peace and Reconciliation

The Awards Gernika for Peace and Reconciliation were established in 2005 during the commemoration of the anniversary of the bombing of Gernika (April 26, 1937) headed by the Town Hall of Gernika-Lumo (Spain), the city of Pforzheim (Germany), Gernika Gogoratuz Foundation, Gernika Peace Museum and the Culture House of Gernika-Lumo. Every year, one of the prizes is awarded to people working towards peace, and the other is presented to great leaders, personalities or institutions which have worked to transform conflict and lay the cornerstones of future reconciliation processes.

On April 26, 1937, the town of Gernika was destructed by the first indiscriminate bombing in history, with 300 people victimized.
