President attended the ceremony to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika

President Akiba attended the 70th Anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika in Gernika-Lumo, Spain. He conveyed the message of peace that no civilians should be victims of wars. He also called for the solidarity of cities in the world. With Mayor Aranaz of Gernika-Lumo, Governor Ibarretxe of the Basque Region, victims of the bombing, and representatives from countries all over the world, he signed the “Gernika Declaration” which is a written pledge directed towards the avoidance of attacks on cities and the realization of a peaceful world.

Together with the participants from all over the world and Mayor Aranaz of Gernika-Lumo, President Akiba paid a visit to the Governor Ibarretxe of the Basque Region. They exchanged opinions on the role of cities aiming to build peace.

President Akiba attended the “70th Anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika” and delivered a speech about the importance of conveying the reality of A-bomb to the generations and the abolition of all violence so that no civilians become victims of wars again.

With Governor Ibarretxe of the Basque Region, Mayor Aranaz of Gernika-Lumo, victims of the bombing and participants from all over the world, President Akiba attended the signing ceremony of the “Gernika Declaration” which is a written pledge directed towards the avoidance of attacks on cities aiming at normal citizens and the realization of a peaceful world.

President Akiba participated in the memorial service for the victims of the bombing held at the common grave where the victims of the bombing rest, and lay down flowers.

President Akiba visited the “Gernika Peace Museum”, the only peace related museum in the Basque Region. The museum holds the International Conference of Peace Museums and also concentrates on the collaboration with peace museums in the world.

President Akiba visited the Guggenheim Museum opened in Bilbao, the capital of the Basque Region, in 1997. This Museum designed by Frank Gehry features a particularly artistic avant-garde design, has had many visitors from all over the world, receives worldwide attention as a model of urban regeneration.
