Nuclear Disarmament Activities in Stockholm, Sweden

November 2007

Mayor Akiba delivered a speech at the Swedish Forum for Human Rights. In his speech, he conveyed the reality of the atomic bombings and introduced an international status to call for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Mayors are in close contact with their citizens, which is why Mayors for Peace and Mayor Akiba have come to the consensus that they are the ones that must do all they can to protect their citizens and create a nuclear-weapon free world. He also asked the participants to tackle the abolition of nuclear weapons by starting in their own immediate environments. Aside from the Forum, he visited the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and met with the Deputy Mayor of Stockholm. He requested support for the 2020 Vision campaign of Mayors for Peace, which aims to abolish nuclear weapons by 2020. He also visited the Nobel Museum and the Nobel Foundation and discussed the possibility of establishing an Asian Nobel Peace Center in Hiroshima. The Nobel Peace Center is located in Oslo, Norway.

Mayor Akiba visited the Nobel Museum and Director Lindqvist briefly explained his management policy and display method.

Mayor Akiba visited the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and expressed his strong desire that grass-root level activities be researched and that initiatives are taken to abolish nuclear weapons.

Mayor Akiba met with the Deputy Mayor of Stockholm, whose city is a member of Mayors for Peace. He requested further support for the 2020 Vision campaign of Mayors for Peace, which aims to abolish nuclear weapons by 2020
