United Nations International Day of Peace Observance and Poster

September 6, 2006

“We are sending out a call to all our member Mayors, allied organizations and concerned individuals to join with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in observing a minute of silence during the Peace on the International Day of Peace ceremony at 9:30am for the Peace Bell Ceremony at United Nations Headquarters in New York City on the 21st of September, in a spirit of Global Peace and Unity.” — Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba of Hiroshima, Japan, and President of Mayors for Peace.

We also invite all individuals and groups to join in observing a minute of silence at 12 noon in their local communities worldwide.

Mayors for Peace wholeheartedly thanks Mr. Frank Liu, President of the World Harmony Foundation, for his support of the International Day of Peace and his most generous contribution to the printing of the original 25,000 posters. Now, due to high demand, Mr. Liu has approved the printing of another 25,000 International Day of Peace Posters. We all are extremely grateful for this gift to the UN and NGO’s worldwide to raise awareness of the International Day of Peace.

We also thank Mr. John Zwerver and Ms. Carolyn Anderson of Global Family for being co-sponsors with us for the International Day of Peace Poster.

Ms. Margo LaZaro, Mayors for Peace representative to the UN in New York, has been part of the UN NGO International Day of Peace (IDP) Committee for many years representing Global Family. This year at the request of the co-chairs of the IDP Committee for a new International Day of Peace Poster, she was able to arrange for Mayors for Peace, the World Harmony Foundation and Global Family to co-sponsor the printing of a new International Day of Peace Poster that will be donated to the UN and the Global community.

As the representative of the sponsors, Margo worked closely with members of the Peace and Securities Unit of the United Nations Department of Public Information and the highly talented and award winning design team of the Outreach Division of the UN DPI. She was grateful to have some input into the spirit and direction of the design and is now overseeing the printing and production of the 50,000 IDP Posters. Of these, 17,500 were donated and delivered to the United Nations on Aug. 30th; the UN will distribute them from UN Headquarters in New York to UN offices and Missions around the world.

We wish to express our deepest appreciation to the members of the United Nations Department of Public Information for their care and support of the International Day of Peace and the opportunity to have a new and inspiring IDP Poster to share globally.

Mayors for Peace is dedicating this International Day of Peace Poster to the memory and spirit of Anthony LaZaro, Margo’s 28 year old nephew, who suddenly passed away on the day that the UN Outreach Division created the final IDP Poster Design with the first appearance of the beam of light above the Dove. This also happened to be Nagasaki Day, the 9th of August. Therefore we also dedicate this Poster to the memory and spirit of all the souls that were lost 61 years ago in both Nagasaki and Hiroshima, in hopes that all cities and peoples may live in shared global peace.

Anthony was like the beam of light in the poster to all who knew him. He was always quick to lend a helping hand to others in need with a big smile, a sparkle in his beautiful blue eyes and warm-hearted goodwill toward all. Anthony had seen several of the preliminary IDP Poster designs during the process of creating this new IDP Poster and knew how much it meant for it to be inspirational for all people. The first 17,500 of the International Day of Peace Posters were delivered to the UN on August 30th which was Anthony’s birthday.

We invite you to download the IDP Poster from our website and make copies to share with members of your community. We encourage you to display the poster as an inspiration toward lasting Global Peace.
