Young Ambassadors of Peace from Varennes-Vauzelles Visit Their German Twin Town of Rheurdt

October 26–30, 2026 [France, Varennes-Vauzelles]

From 26 to 30 October 2026, a delegation from Varennes-Vauzelles, France, visited its German twin town of Rheurdt as part of the ongoing friendship and cooperation between the two municipalities.

The delegation consisted of **11 elected members of the Varennes-Vauzelles Municipal Youth Council and one Peace Ambassador**. This visit provided a valuable opportunity for young people to discover a different culture, build lasting friendships and experience European solidarity in practice.

The group was welcomed at the AWO youth camp in Sevelen, where participants settled into their accommodation and enjoyed a welcome reception, marking the beginning of five days of shared experiences.

On Tuesday, the delegation discovered the town of Rheurdt and took part in a Franco-German meeting with local young people. These exchanges encouraged dialogue, mutual understanding and the sharing of experiences between the two generations of young citizens. In the evening, the group attended the German Cup football match between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Karlsruher SC, enjoying an exciting sporting experience together.

Wednesday was dedicated to sport and intercultural exchange. The young French participants took part in sporting activities at the football stadium alongside members of **SpVgg Rheurdt-Schaephuysen 2014 e.V.** The day continued with a memorable evening organised with German Scouts. Around a campfire, the young people shared conversations and experiences, while also discovering archery through an introductory activity.

On Thursday, the delegation visited the **Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord (Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park)**, a remarkable site combining industrial heritage and nature, where a former industrial complex has been transformed into a unique cultural and recreational space. The group then spent some time shopping in Duisburg. The day concluded with an evening gathering at the Rheurdt Youth Centre, providing one last opportunity to share memories and strengthen the friendships developed throughout the week.

On Friday, it was time for the French delegation to return home, taking with them many wonderful memories and new friendships.

Young people building a culture of peace

Beyond the cultural visits and sporting activities, this exchange illustrates the essential role that young generations can play in building a more peaceful and united world.

By bringing young French and German citizens together, the twinning partnership between Varennes-Vauzelles and Rheurdt helps promote dialogue, tolerance, mutual understanding and European friendship.

These values are also at the heart of the commitment of Varennes-Vauzelles to “Mayors for Peace”. Through initiatives such as this youth exchange, the municipality seeks to pass on a culture of peace to younger generations, encouraging them to become active citizens and ambassadors of peace in their own communities.

Because peace is not only something to commemorate: it is something we must build together, day after day, and pass on to future generations.
