This first visit by a delegation outside the municipal framework demonstrates the desire to develop exchanges, particularly among young people.
As part of the partnership between Varennes-Vauzelles and Rheurdt (Germany), the municipality welcomed a delegation of thirty young scouts and six accompanying adults on Monday. Passing through the Nièvre region before heading to their summer camp in the Tarn gorges, they wanted to discover their partner town.
Having arrived on foot from Nevers railway station, they were welcomed by local elected officials and partners. Their visit gave them the opportunity to discover several emblematic places: the town hall, the Gérard-Philipe cultural centre and the Place du Président-Petit. They also visited the exhibition dedicated to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, presented beneath the pyramid of the Hôtel de Ville, as part of the partnership with Marc Abois (Historic Overlord Club) and the Mayors for Peace network, to which both municipalities belong.
An important step in the twinning partnership
After this visit, the scouts joined the Francheville sports complex for an overnight stay at the campsite. Dinner was served at the Saint-Just school restaurant. In the spirit of scouting, the young people were encouraged to tidy up and wash the dishes themselves, creating a friendly and responsible atmosphere.
The following morning, they were offered a French breakfast before departing by train towards the Tarn gorges.
This first visit by a delegation from Rheurdt outside the strictly municipal framework marks an important milestone in the twinning partnership. It illustrates the desire to develop exchanges between residents, particularly young people.
The people of Varennes-Vauzelles were delighted with this meeting, held under the banner of Franco-German friendship, youth and peace. The municipality told them: “You are welcome here, and you will always be welcome in Varennes-Vauzelles!”
