During the Mayors for Peace Executive Conference in November 2015, a new international traveling art project to promote a nuclear free world was proposed by the City of Hannover, a Lead City in Germany.
This international art project, titled “50 Cities 50 Traces”, was initiated by Klaudia Dietewich, an artist based in Stuttgart, Germany, and promotes the Cities Are Not Targets (CANT) initiative of Mayors for Peace. The project is intended to begin in 2018 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons signed by the USA, the Soviet Union and the UK in 1968.
The artwork is comprised of 50 photographic panels of “Traces” of human presence found in different Mayors for Peace cities. The traveling exhibition is intended to start in Japan in 2018, successively move to other Mayors for Peace cities around the world interested in hosting the project, and end in 2020 in New York City, where the UN Headquarters are located, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the conclusion of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The City of Hannover invites Mayors for Peace member cities to join this initiative and participate in this project. This exhibition can be a good tool for peace education in your city, for raising awareness of the Mayors for Peace objectives, as well as for strengthening the network among Mayors for Peace members. The City of Mutlangen, Germany has responded to this call and an open space for the exhibit is now being designed. This planned space will also serve as a place of remembrance and responsibility for the future.
