“Tree for Peace” – a commemorative event

May 8, 2015 [Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany]

On May 8th, a ceremony was held to install a plaque that commemorates the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings and to plant a sapling of a gingko tree. The event was organized in response to the request by Mayors for Peace to hold events to commemorate the 70th anniversary. Ginkgo has become a symbol of peace because some gingko trees survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

Mayor Dagmar Mühlenfeld presented the plaque and the gingko tree and announced that Mülheim an der Ruhr would support the petition drive by Mayors for Peace that calls for a global ban on nuclear weapons.
