In partnership with organizations; private, government and non-government community based groups, with the assistance of a number of volunteers, have coordinated for community based events, in locations throughout the Cairns Region including Mossman.

The theme this year is “Cairns United in Peace” the aim is to encourage all of us to examine, help self, and others. As it does every year, Peace Week brings together people from a variety of cultural backgrounds in an atmosphere of social inclusion through the arts and story telling.

The event aims to raise awareness of some of the issues that affect or are important to us, both globally and locally; to celebrate our regions diversity, create awareness about what concerns us and to recognize the achievements of our community. Peace Week encourages people to go beyond their own communities and to extend a hand to those groups or people that they may not have the opportunity to work with or meet otherwise. Ultimately the event aims to promote compassion and understanding between all people in the community and across the world. To create a Culture of Peace we must begin by respecting all people, ideas and beliefs different to ours, provided that they are positive and in the interest of the community’s well being.

There are over one hundred different language groups represented in our region. We have one of the highest regional Indigenous populations in Queensland. This event aims to create opportunities so Council could engage better with its communities and improve community relations.

The year’s Peace Week theme is Cairns United in Peace. The week long festival will begin with a cultural performance in the City Place 11:30am-7pm that will include dance performances by people from Papua New Guinea, Japan, China, Indonesia, Korea and the Cook Islands.
