1. Outline of the Award
The Gautam Buddha International Peace Award was formally launched by the Government of Nepal in 2002. The award is given every five years to recognize and honor individuals and institutions around the world that have made a significant contribution to peace and non-violence inspired by the teachings and messages of Lord Buddha.
On January 13, 2011, the Government of Nepal decided to confer the first Gautam Buddha International Peace Award jointly to the mayors of Hiroshima, Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba, and Nagasaki, Mr. Tomihisa Taue, based on the unanimous recommendation of the Management and Selection Committee of the Award (Chairman of the committee: Mr. Kul Chandra Gautam), recognizing their achievements for peace as the leaders of Mayors for Peace. The mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have the honor of being the first awardees of this Peace Award.
