Commemorative events for the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings

This year, the City of Wuerzburg organized various events to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Mayors for Peace A-bomb Poster Exhibition in the Wuerzburg City Hall

From August 3rd to September 11th, the city held the Mayors for Peace A-bomb Poster Exhibition under the title “Die Atombomben von Hiroshima und Nagasaki” at the City Hall. The exhibition was opened by Vice Mayor Marion Schäfer-Blake.

Lord Mayor Schuchardt’s visit to Nagasaki

From August 8th to 11th, Lord Mayor Christian Schuchardt visited the City of Nagasaki. Wuerzburg and Nagasaki established a Citizens’ Friendship Affiliation in 2013. Apart from attending the Peace Memorial Ceremony on August 9th, he paid a courtesy call to Mr. Tomihisa Taue, Mayor of Nagasaki City and Vice President of the Mayors for Peace, visited the Atomic Bomb Museum and offered flowers at the hypocenter.

Reception for the Himawari Choir

On October 25th at the Siebold-Museum Wuerzburg, a concert by a choir of atomic bomb survivors from Nagasaki, the Himawari (“Sunflower”) Choir, was hosted by the City of Wuerzburg with cooperation from Nagasaki. The following day, Lord Mayor Schuchardt hosted a reception for the members of the Himawari Choir at the City Hall.
