Hiroshima Peace Study Field Trip of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies 2025

From Thursday, February 13th to Sunday, February 16th, students from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies visited Hiroshima City and took part in learning activities such as listening to the testimony of an atomic bomb survivor as well as Atomic Bomb Memoir Readings, and touring the Peace Memorial Museum. This is part of a research trip for the university's courses “History in the public sphere: Memory culture in Japan” and “The Hiroshima Atomic Bomb and its Commemoration as a Focus of Public History,” which are recognized as the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Peace Study Course.

The students by listening to the survivor’s testimony deepened their consideration on the issue of passing on the experience of the atomic bombing to a new generation, asking the survivor questions about the difficulty of expressing and conveying their experiences in words and about the survivor’s own feelings toward the museum. In addition, during the tour of the Peace Memorial Park, students exchanged opinions with Youth Peace Volunteers, high school and university students who serve as guides, on a variety of topics, including not only the historical sites in the park but also the different implementations of peace education in each region.

For the students, the series of programs deepened their understanding of the reality of the atomic bombing and also provided an opportunity to interact with a survivor, reading volunteers, and Youth Peace Volunteers.
