Hiroshima Peace Study Field Trip of DePaul University (USA) 2024
From Friday, December 6th to Wednesday, December 11th, students from DePaul University (USA) visited Hiroshima and learned about peace as part of the university's course “Atom Bomb Discourse”, which is recognized as the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Peace Study Course. This was the university's eighth peace learning program visit to Japan. They visited both Hiroshima and Nagasaki as in previous years.
On the Friday, the students listened to a lecture by Mr. Kagawa, chairperson of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, and then toured the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. From the next day through to the Tuesday, they toured various peace-related facilities, listened to lectures, and conducted fieldwork, and on the final day, they met with Mayor Matsui and exchanged opinions on the concept of “the Culture of Peace.”
Through their six-day peace studies in Hiroshima, the students deepened their understanding of the reality of the atomic bombing, and on the evening of the Tuesday, many of them participated in the public viewing of the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony, reaffirming their determination for peace, saying, “We want to take the message of the atomic bomb survivors to heart and pass it on to the next generation.”
