Hiroshima Peace Study Field Trip of Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (USA) 2024
On June 9th (Sun) and 10th (Mon), students from Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (USA) visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and learned about peace as a part of the university's course “Sustaining the World Peace: SDGs focused service-learning in Japan,” which is recognized as the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Peace Study Course.
On the first day of the program, the students toured the Peace Memorial Park under the guidance of the Youth Peace Volunteers, a group consisting of high school and university students. Afterwards, they visited the G7 Hiroshima Summit Commemorative Gallery, newly established in May 2024, and participated in discussions about the significance of the summit and how to guide visitors through this gallery. On the second day, they visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and listened to the testimony of an atomic bomb survivor, to deepen their understanding of the realities of the atomic bombing. Additionally, they received a lecture from RERF (Radiation Effects Research Foundation) instructor on the health effects of radiation and the efforts of the foundation.
Through the program in Hiroshima, the students had the opportunity to learn about the realities of the atomic bombing as a part of their peace studies and to engage in meaningful dialogues with all those involved in the program, including young people engaged in peace activities in Hiroshima.
