Hiroshima Peace Study Field Trip of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies 2024

On February 28th (Wed) and February 29th (Thu), students from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies visited Peace Memorial Park, where they worked on learning activities such as listening to talk by an Atomic Bomb Legacy Successor, joining Atomic Bomb Memoir Readings, and touring the Peace Memorial Museum. This is part of the field trip for the university's courses “History in the public sphere: Memory culture in Japan” and “The Hiroshima Atomic Bomb and its Commemoration as a Focus of Public History,” which are recognized as the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Peace Study Course.

At Talk by an Atomic Bomb Legacy Successor and Atomic Bomb Memoir Readings, the students asked many questions to the successor and the reading volunteers, showing their interests in ‘‘conveying’’ atomic bomb survivors’ experiences, such as the reasons why and under what circumstances the survivors began to talk about their experiences. In addition, during the tour of Peace Memorial Park, the students exchanged opinions with Youth Peace Volunteers, high school and university students who served as guides, about a wide range of topics, including not only the historical sites within the park but also the current international situation.

For the students, the series of programs deepened their understanding of the realities of the atomic bombing and also provided them with opportunities to interact with the successor, the reading volunteers, and the Youth Peace Volunteers.
