The Mayor of Hiroshima delivers a speech at Waseda University (December 19, 2009)
On Saturday, December 19, 2009, Mayor Akiba of Hiroshima delivered a speech at Waseda University entitled "Lessons from Hiroshima - The Path to a Peaceful World, Free From Nuclear Weapons: The 21st Century-People Solving Their Own Problems". There were about 250 students in attendance. Waseda University has a long established Hiroshima-Nagasaki Peace Study Courses program.
In his speech, Mayor Akiba introduced the reality of the atomic bombings and the experiences of A-bomb survivors. He stressed the significance of efforts by citizens and cities toward the total elimination of nuclear weapons, and called for joint efforts saying, "together, we can achieve a nuclear-weapon-free world by 2020".
