Replanting a second-generation A-bombed Ginkgo tree during a peace event

March 4, 2018
Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Catalonia, Spain

The City of Sant Feliu de Llobregat, a member city of Mayors for Peace and also member of the executive committee of the Catalan Chapter of Mayors for Peace, organized an event on March 4th to replant its second-generation A-bombed Ginkgo tree in an emblematic space of the city, the 'Roserar de Dot i de Camprubí' rose garden. The tree had been growing in a local school “Aula Sant Feliu.”

The day of solidarity started in the morning with music and a theater procession through the streets of the city ending in the place where the Ginkgo was replanted. Councilor Lourdes Borell from Sant Feliu and Councilor Alba Barnusell from Granollers, who are in charge of the solidarity and cooperation program in each city, officiated the ceremony and children were responsible for the planting.

Before that, a Kyudo, a form of Japanese martial arts ceremony took place in the park. The event continued with children's entertainment, origami and bonsai workshops. The event was organized by the City Council of Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Els Amics de les Roses de Sant Feliu (Rose friends of Sant Feliu) and The Solidarity Program.

The event served to convey the realities of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and raise public awareness for peace. At present, 4 Spanish cities have embraced the Ginkgo tree as a symbol of peace in the hope of building a better world without nuclear weapons.
