Executive Conference

Outline of the 9th Executive Conference of Mayors for Peace

The 9th Executive Conference was held in Ypres, Belgium. During the conference, the participants discussed the future plans of Mayors for Peace, reported on their activities to encourage the abolition of nuclear weapons and address other issues unique to each region, and shared information with each other.

4. Major decisions (For details, please refer to the “Final Communiqué”.)
  • 1. The Hiroshima Secretariat will take over the 2020 Vision Campaign from the city of
    Ypres.
  • 2. Intensified activities for Mayors for Peace based on the “2020 Vision” were identified.
  • 3. Along with the activities based on the “2020 Vision” to eliminate nuclear weapons, we will address such pressing issues as poverty, refugees, and climate change in accordance with Article 3 of the Mayors for Peace Covenant.
  • 4. We will hold the 9th Mayors for Peace General Conference in Nagasaki in August 2017.
Furthermore, the participants exchanged opinions on the following:
  • 1. Holding the 10th General Conference in Hiroshima in 2020 (a year earlier than according to the conference cycle of every four years)
  • 2. Setting up a post-2020 goal at the 10th General Conference in 2020
  • 3. Implementing concrete activities to urge national governments to take immediate action to start negotiations on and conclude a nuclear weapons convention
>Resolution This will be sent to national governments through their embassies in Japan, the United Nations, and all member cities of Mayors for Peace.
>Final Communiqué This will be sent to all member cities.
