Attending the 50th anniversary commemorative workshop of Pugwash Conference(July 12, 2007)
President Akiba attended the “Disarmament Workshop ‘Revitalizing Nuclear Disarmament’”, which was a commemorative event for the 50th anniversary of the Pugwash Conferences, held in Pugwash,Canada. He asked all to concentrate the power of the citizens and to realize the nuclear weapon-free world by the year 2020.

2020 Vision Campaign--
Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons

Mayors for Peace launched an "Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons" to promote its "2020 Vision," a program to eliminate all nuclear weapons by the year 2020, the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We are promoting Cities Are Not Targets, a concrete, global project of the Good Faith Challenge, a new aspect of our 2020 Vision Campaign for the abolition of nuclear weapons. We trust we can count on your continued cooperation and support.

Letters from the City of Hiroshima demanding the de-targeting and non-targeting of cities.   (Feb. 22, 2007)
We ask that all members of Mayors for Peace and all cities around the world write your own letters to your national governments and the governments of the nuclear-armed nations reiterating that "Cities Are Not Targets".
2020 Vision Campaign International Campaign Secretariat Opened in Ieper, Belgium
To better promote the 2020 Vision Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons, Mayors for Peace, with assistance from the government of Ieper, Belgium, opened a new International Secretariat on July 2006.

Mayors for Peace supports AFS Petition for a Global Expansion of Educational Youth Exchange Programs
AFS is sponsoring a major, high profile undertaking for its 60th anniversary year that will be a Petition Drive to gather signatures in supports of a global expansion of youth exchange programs. Please join this petition drive to promote peace through intercultural understanding.

Attending the 70th Anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika
President Akiba attended the 70th Anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika. He called for the solidarity of cities in the world and signed the "Gernika Declaration" which is a written pledge directed towards the avoidance of attacks on cities and the realization of a peaceful world.

Attending the 2007 NPT Preparatory Committee
Mayoral Delegation Representatives, including mayors, from member cities of Mayors for Peace comprises Mayoral Delegation, and attended the Preparatory Committee for the NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) Review Conference held in Vienna, Austria, and President Akiba delivered a speech at the NGO session.

Mayors for Peace Wins the IPB Sean MacBride Award

The international peace NGO IPB has given Mayors for Peace its Sean MacBride Peace Prize in recognition of its achievements in arousing international public demand for the abolition of nuclear weapons and lasting world peace through the 2020 Vision (Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons) and other global peace promotion activities.

 ICJ 10th Anniversary Commemorative Events ICJ 10th Anniversary Commemorative Events
On the occasion of 10th anniversary of the ICJ advisory opinion stating “… the threat or use of nuclear weapons would generally be contrary to the rules of international law”, we held commemorative meetings in The Hague (The Netherlands) and Brussels (Belgium) in July 2006. The new campaign, the Good Faith Challenge, Phase II of our 2020 Vision Campaign, launched at these occasions.
 
 Mayoral Delegation of Mayors for Peace participated in the NPT Review Conference
March at New York
A mayoral delegation organized by Mayors for Peace participated in the Review Conference on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in May 2005. This mayoral delegation attended Peace March and Rally, visited national missions, attended conference sessions, held its own conference, and called for the abolition of nuclear weapons at every possible opportunity.
