The 8th Executive Conference of Mayors for Peace in Granollers, Spain and the Opening of an Exhibition about the Atomic Bombings and Disarmament in the United Nations Office at Geneva (December 14, 2011)
On November 9 and 10, the 8th Executive Conference of Mayors for Peace was held in Granollers, Spain. Granollers is one of the vice president cities of Mayors for Peace. The following day, the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki attended the opening ceremony for an exhibition about the atomic bombings and disarmament in the United Nations Office at Geneva, Switzerland and each mayor gave a speech at a public discussion.
The 8th Executive Conference of Mayors for Peace held in Granollers, Spain(November 9, 2011)
On November 9 and 10, the 8th Executive Conference of Mayors for Peace is held in Granollers, Spain. Granollers is one of the vice president cities of Mayors for Peace. The following day, the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki attend the opening ceremony for a permanent exhibition about the atomic bombings and disarmament in the United Nations Office at Geneva, Switzerland and each mayor gives a speech at a commemorative lecture.
Montevideo, Uruguay became a new executive city(November 9, 2011)
On October 24, Montevideo, Uruguay, was appointed as an executive city. Montevideo has been actively promoting the activities of Mayors for Peace in the Mercosur region. Further development of Mayors for Peace activities in South America will be expected.
Awarded the 32nd Prize for Peace from the United Nations Association of Spain

On October 24, Mayors for Peace was awarded the 32nd Prize for Peace from the United Nations Association of Spain, recognizing our efforts toward the elimination of nuclear weapons.
Mayor of Nagasaki attends an "International Forum for A Nuclear Weapons-Free World" in Astana, Kazakhstan(November 7, 2011)
On October 12 and 13, Mayor Taue of Nagasaki attended an "International Forum for A Nuclear Weapons-Free World" in Astana, Kazakhstan. He delivered a speech at the Panel Session 1 of the forum. He also visited Semey City, formerly known as Semipalatinsk City.

On September 23 and 24, 2011, young diplomats and disarmament experts from around the world visited Hiroshima under the UN Disarmament Fellowship program. Chairman Leeper of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation presented a brief overview of Mayors for Peace to the fellows.

U.S. Conference of Mayors issues Mayors for Peace Recruitment Appeal (August 11, 2011)
On July 29, the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) for the first time sent a recruitment letter on behalf of Mayors for Peace to its full membership of nearly 1,200 mayors of cities with populations over 30,000.

Mayor Matsui of Hiroshima Delivers His First Policy Speech (June 30, 2011)
On June 17, 2011, Mayor Matsui of Hiroshima delivered his first policy speech at the Hiroshima City Council. He expressed basic ideas and major policies to promote city administration, including the efforts for our "city with a shared wish for peace." His response to a question about Mayors for Peace on June 23 is also available.
US Conference of Mayors Adopts Resolution in Support of 2020 Vision (PDF file)

On June 20, 2011, a resolution sponsored by US members of Mayors for Peace has been adopted at the 79th US Conference of Mayors annual meeting held in Baltimore, US. Prior to adoption, it was endorsed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the first UN chief to address the USCM.

From May 15 to 18, Steve Leeper, Chairman of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, attended the 2011 World Human Right Cities Forum in Gwangju, South Korea. He spoke on behalf of the mayor of Hiroshima about the peace policies of Hiroshima and Mayors for Peace.

IKV Pax Christi in the Netherlands has just released a report on what NATO countries really say about the deployment of U.S. tactical (or sub-strategic or non-strategic) nuclear weapons. After interviewing all 28 NATO delegations, as well as NATO staffers concerned with nuclear planning and deployment, they assessed the future of tactical nuclear weapons deployment in Europe. The result of these interviews is now available in the report: Withdrawal Issues: What NATO countries say about the future of tactical nuclear weapons in Europe.

Following Hiroshima's mayoral election on April 10, 2011, Mr. Kazumi Matsui, the new Mayor of Hiroshima, assumed office as the new President of Mayors for Peace.
Cities Are Not Targets! (CANT) Petition Forms on Permanent Display at UN Headquarters (April 12, 2011)
The 1.02 million signature petition forms collected for the “Cities Are Not Targets! (CANT)” initiative are now on permanent display at the UN Headquarters in New York. The petition forms were submitted to the UN in May 2010, on the occasion of the NPT Review Conference. The exhibit was inaugurated by UN Secretary-General Ban
Ki-moon and US Messenger of Peace, actor Michael Douglas, on March 24.

The Conference Report for the Hiroshima Conference for the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons by 2020 is now available. The Conference was held in July 2010 and the Hiroshima Appeal, the future action plan for Mayors for Peace, was also announced at the conference.

Nobel Peace Laureate Ms. Mairead Maguire, who lives in Northern Ireland, nominated jointly Nihon Hidankyo (Japan Confederation of A and H Bomb Sufferers Organization) and Mayors for Peace, for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize.
The 1st Gautam Buddha International Peace Award Conferred on the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the Government of Nepal (January 13, 2011) posted on January 21
The Government of Nepal has decided to confer the first Gautam Buddha International Peace Award jointly to the mayors of Hiroshima, Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba, and Nagasaki, Mr. Tomihisa Taue, recognizing their achievements for peace as the leaders of Mayors for Peace.

Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award Presented to the Mayor of Hiroshima (January 5, 2011) posted on January 21
The Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University recognized the tireless efforts of Mayor Akiba who, as President of Mayors for Peace, worked to foster peace and take steps towards banning nuclear weapons by 2020, with a Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award. The Award Presentation Ceremony was held in Hiroshima on January 5, 2011.

2020 Vision Campaign--
Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons

Mayors for Peace launched an "Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons" to promote its "2020 Vision," a program to eliminate all nuclear weapons by the year 2020, the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The Franza-Moll Foundaton has given Mayor Akiba and Mayors for Peace its 2007 Nuclear - Free Future Award in recognition of its achievements in arousing international public demand for the abolition of nuclear weapons and lasting world peace through the 2020 Vision and other global peace promotion activities.
Award ceremony at Helsinki The IPB Sean MacBride Award(Sept. 8, 2006)
The international peace NGO IPB has given Mayors for Peace its Sean MacBride Peace Prize in recognition of its achievements in arousing international public demand for the abolition of nuclear weapons and lasting world peace through the 2020 Vision (Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons) and other global peace promotion activities.
 
World Citizenship Award (Oct. 8, 2004)
Presented by Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (headquarters: Santa Barbara, California; founded in 1998). The Mayor of Hiroshima received the award on behalf of Mayors for Peace at a ceremony in Hiroshima. The award is presented every year to individuals or groups that have made excellent contributions to world peace and human development.
