Participation in the 8th NPT Review Conference
May 2010
Mayors for Peace formed a mayoral delegation of 89 people from 30 member cities in 10 countries and participated in the NPT Review Conference held in New York, USA. During the conference, we conveyed the voices from Hiroshima and Nagasaki directly to representatives of each government and urged them to make efforts to realize the abolition of nuclear weapons by the year 2020.

Visiting Nicaragua and the 78th Winter Meeting of the U.S. Conference of
Mayors
January 2010
President of Mayors for Peace visited
Nicaragua, where the number of member cities has rapidly increased. He also
attended the 78th Winter Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) at
Washington DC.

Participation in the 62nd Annual DPI/NGO Conference
September 2009
President Akiba participated in the 62nd Annual UN DPI (Department of Public
Information)/NGO Conference held in Mexico City, in cooperation with NGOs
under the theme "For Peace and Development: Disarm Now!". In
order to have the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol adopted at the NPT Review Conference in 2010, he promoted understanding
and cooperation with the initiatives of Mayors for Peace including the
Protocol and 2020 Vision Campaign, as well as establishing good relationships
with UN officials, government representatives and peace related NGOs to
realize a world without nuclear weapons. |

Participation in the third meeting of International Commission on Nuclear
Non-proliferation and Disarmament (ICNND)
June 2009
President Akiba participated in the 3rd meeting of the International Commission
on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (ICNND) in Moscow, Russia,
led by the Japanese and Australian governments. In addition to promoting
the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol as well as the 2020 Vision Campaign [Emergency
Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons], we actively promoted understanding and
cooperation with our mission. Furthermore, bonds were forged between committee
members that will assist in the implementation of the 4th ICNND meeting
to be held in Hiroshima this October..

US Conference of Mayors (USCM) 77th Annual Meeting
June 2009
Held in Providence, Rhode Island, President Akiba participated in the 77th
Annual Meeting of the US Conference of Mayors, promoting the Hiroshima-Nagasaki
Protocol as well as the 2020 Vision Campaign [Emergency Campaign to Ban
Nuclear Weapons]. Calling to the mayors of the world's nuclear superpower,
Mayors for Peace encouraged both understanding of and cooperation with
its mission, moving ever closer to a world free of nuclear weapons through
city-driven activities.

Participation in the 2009 NPT PrepCom: Third Preparatory Committee meeting for
the 2010 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference
May 2009
Mayors for Peace formed a mayoral delegation and attended the 2009 NPT
PrepCom in New York. The delegation promoted the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol,
2020 Vision Campaign, and nuclear weapons abolition through speeches delivered
by the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the NGO session, ortganizng
a side event, and meetings with government representatives. Part of the
delegation also visited Washington D.C. to meet members of Congress and
the Obama administration to stress the importance of a time-bound commitment
to the abolition of nuclear weapons.

2020 Vision Campaign Association Board Meeting and other activities in
Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg
November 2008
The Meeting of the Board of Directors of the 2020 Vision Campaign Association
was held in Ypres, Belgium and plans for future activities in 2020 Vision
Campaign were discussed. President Akiba took this opportunity to visit
some of the member cities in Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg, and participated
in various peace related events.
To promote the efforts toward the abolition of nuclear weapons by the year
2020, he also met with representatives of national govenments and NGOs,
and asked for their support and cooperation for the activities of Mayors
for Peace.

Submission of some of the collected signatures for the CANT petition to
the President of the UN General Assembly
October 27, 2008
President Akiba of Mayors for Peace visited UN Headquarters in New York, submitted some of the 370,221 collected signatures for the petition "Cities Are Not Targets (CANT)" to the President of the UN General Assembly, and asked for UN's support for promotion of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol, stressing that abolition of nuclear weapons is a common wish among people around the world.

Orizuru Night Game was held in conjunction with the 2020 Vision Campaign

Thanks to the cooperation of the Coop Hiroshima and the Hiroshima Toyo
Carp baseball team, Orizuru Night Game (paper crane night game) was held
in conjunction with an official professional baseball game, and conveyed
the message for peace from Hiroshima to the world. |

Attending the 2008 NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) Preparatory Committee
May 2008
Representatives, including mayors, from Mayors for Peace member cities
comprised the Mayoral Delegation, and attended the Preparatory Committee
for the NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) Review Conference held in
Geneva, Switzerland. President Akiba delivered a speech at the NGO session
and also announced the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol.

Appeal activities in Scandinavia for the abolition of nuclear weapons
November 2007
President Akiba visited Copenhagen(Denmark) and Stockholm(Sweden).
Through a lecture at an internaional conference on peace education and
issues related to human rights, as well as a conference with officials
from both cities, he transmitted the reality of the atomic bombings and
the message of the survivors and appealed for cooperation with the "2020
Vision". |

Attending the 50th anniversary commemorative workshop of Pugwash Conference
July 2007
President Akiba attended the “Disarmament Workshop ‘Revitalizing Nuclear Disarmament’”, which was a commemorative event for the 50th anniversary of the Pugwash Conferences, held in Pugwash,Canada. He asked all to concentrate the power of the citizens and to realize the nuclear weapon-free world by the year 2020

In September 2006, President Akiba visited Finland and Norway to attend a World Congress of IPPNW. There and in several venues he called for assistance with abolishing nuclear weapons. |

ICJ 10th Anniversary Commemorative Events
July 2006
On the occasion of 10th anniversary of the ICJ advisory opinion stating "… the threat or use of nuclear weapons would generally be contrary to the rules of international law", we organized mayoral delegation and participated in commemorative meetings held by European peace NGOs. |
