The 6th General Conference of Mayors for Peace, Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Atomic Bombings

Along with the theme of our General Conference, gWhat Cities Can Do to Abolish Nuclear Weapons - toward a nuclear weapon-free world by 2020 -g, we held our 6th General Conference of Mayors for Peace in Hiroshima, Japan, from August 4 to 6, 2005. 243 people participated in our conference from 92 cities and 4 organizations in 20 countries as well as 14 representatives of national governments and 7 NGOs.

Opening Ceremony Section Meeting
Opening Ceremony , August 4
President Akiba delivered an address at the opening ceremony. After the opening ceremony, the general conference was held, where executives were elected and the future actions were decided.
Section Meeting, August 5
We had two section meetings at the general conference, and the topics gInternational Cooperation for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons - partnership with NGOs and national governments-h and gPeaceful Resolution of Conflicts and the Atomic Bomb Survivor's Messageh were discussed.

At the Opening Ceremony, Dr. Kuniko Inoguchi, professor at Sophia University, Tokyo, gave a keynote speech with the topic gEvaluation the 2005 NPT Review Conference and Prospects for Nuclear Abolitionh.
Peace Memorial Ceremony, August 6
The participants of the general conference attended to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony held in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on August 6.

Exchange with Hiroshima Residents, August 5
We discussed what needs to be done from the citizens' viewpoint towards the abolition of nuclear weapons in 2020 and organized a forum for the exchange between participants of the general conference and citizens.

Ms. Susan Walker, a humanitarian affairs and disarmament consultant, gave her keynote speech at the plenary session.

A-bomb Survivor Testimony •‰
A-bomb Survivor Testimony , August 6
Mr. Akihiro Takahashi, A-bomb survivor and former director of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, talked about his A-bomb experience. The use of drawings and photographs gave it a strong feeling of 'being there' and the testimony ended in standing ovations.
Closing Ceremony, August 6
All the representatives of the executive cities gathered on stage after the end of the closing ceremony. At the closing ceremony the gHiroshima Appealh was adopted. It includes the aim to conclude a nuclear weapons convention by 2010 in order to realize the abolition of nuclear weapons by 2020.
