For a nuclear weapons convention and a nuclear-free world by 2020.![]() Two three-meter-high tower of the petition forms (Photo Credit: UNODA) Our original CANT(Cities Are Not Targets) petition called for nuclear-armed states to stop targeting cities with nuclear weapons. With the help of thousands of peace-loving groups and individuals, we collected more than a million signatures, which we presented directly to the president of the NPT Review Conference. The petition forms are now on permanent display at the UN Headquarters in New York. Let’s tell our leaders we want a nuclear weapons convention!![]() Hiroshima’s mayor Matsui and high school students gathering signatures downtown(July 2011) The most effective way to abolish nuclear weapon by 2020 is a nuclear weapons convention. This convention was mentioned in the Final Document of the 2010 NPT Review Conference and called for by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his Five-Point Plan. Mayors for Peace will work with other civil society organizations to build momentum and urge Japan, the only A-bombed nations, to work with other nation states to quickly commence negotiations and conclude a nuclear weapons convention without further delay. ![]() |
