In recent years, the surroundings of nuclear weapons faces critical situation. The possibility of the proliferation and the use of nuclear weapons are growing higher, and NPT is on the verge of collapse. In response to this mounting peril, Mayors for Peace is promoting our 2020 Vision ( Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons), a program to eliminate all nuclear weapons by the year 2020, 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki from autumn in 2003.
To mark the 10th anniversary of the ICJ Advisory Opinion last year, Mayors for Peace launched the Good Faith Challenge, as Phase II of our 2020 Vision Campaign, reaffirming the meaning and importance of the ICJ advisory opinion. We call for the Good Faith negotiations to all nuclear-weapon states and other states, cities and citizens.
Cities Are Not Targets -CANT Project-
At the city level, we launched the Cities Are Not Targets project internationally. Mayors for Peace will encourage and assist cities and municipal associations in demanding assurances from nuclear-weapon states that cities are not and will not be targeted for nuclear attack. Cities are homes and offices. They are not legitimate targets for bombs. To obliterate a city for any reason whatsoever is an illegal, immoral crime against humanity and not to be tolerated. The CANT project is not a selfish attempt by cities to protect themselves. Using the example of entire cities held hostage, we intend to reveal the cruel absurdity of nuclear war.
Please tell the nuclear powers that Cities Are Not Targets!(Feb. 27, 2007)
Please participate in the petition drive associated with this project. Mayors for Peace will deliver your message to the nuclear-weapon states and to the United Nations.
Network of support prevails internationally
We received a lot of approvals and supports from not only Japanese cities, but also cities around the world as well as some organizations such as EU Parliament, United States Conference of Mayors and IPPNW.
