Thanks to cooperation from the Coop Hiroshima and the Hiroshima Toyo Carp baseball team, "Orizuru (paper crane) Night Game" to call for peace was held in conjunction with an official professional baseball game.
Oct, 2008 Mayor Akiba visited UN Headquarters in New York and submitted some of the 370,221 collected signatures for the petition "Cities Are Not Targets (CANT)" to the UN Secretary-General, which appealed that the abolition of nuclear weapons is the common wish amongst the people all over the world.
Nov, 2008 Mayor Akiba attended the meeting of the Board of Directors of the 2020 Vision Campaign Association in Ypres, Belgium. He also visited some member cities in Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg and asked the mayors and the Prime minister of Belgium for further support for the activities of Mayors for Peace.
May, 2009 Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki attended the NPT PreCom in New York. Mayor of Hiroshima appealed to abolish nuclear weapons by 2020 calling the world's majority supporting a world without nuclear weapons the "Obamajority".

Jun, 2009 Mayor Akiba attended the 77th General Assembly of the US Conference of Mayors, where a favorable resolution of the activities on the Mayors for Peace was adopted.
Mayor Akiba attended the 3rd ICNND in Moscow, Russia and asked for further support for Mayors for Peace to abolish nuclear weapons by 2020.
Aug, 2009 The 7th General Conference of Mayors for Peace was held in Nagasaki and adopted the Nagasaki Appeal and the Action Plan.
Sep, 2009 Mayor Akiba attended the 62nd Annual DPI/NGO Conference in Mexico City, appealed the importance of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol in the NPT Review Conference in 2010 as a concrete road map to abolish nuclear weapons by 2020.
