World Conference of Mayors for Peace through Inter-city Solidarity |
 |
With end of the 20th century, the
"century of war, "
the Mayors Conference has taken a number of important steps to prepare
for the new age. The unique, distinguishing characteristic of the
20th century is that human science and technology created concrete
dangers that threaten the very existence of humankind. Nuclear weapons
are one such danger. Global environmental degradation is another.
Because human beings created these problems, the responsibility
for solving them naturally falls to us.
In addition, we have learned that many people in our member cities
are deeply concerned about the obvious increase in violent crimes
perpetrated by youth. The attitude and culture of violence are spreading
among those who will guide the 21st century. To address this and
other common problems, we will hold the 5th World Conference of
Mayors for Peace through Inter-city Solidarity (5th General Conference)
from August 4 to 9, 2001 in Hiroshima and Nagasaki; the keynote
theme will be: In Order for Humankind to Live through the 21st Century
Toward Reconciliation between Humankind and Science and Technology.
We fervently hope that hundreds of cities around the world will
participate on this conference. We want to ensure that all fully
understand the A-bomb survivors' message that nuclear weapons are
an absolute evil. We want to raise peace consciousness, strengthen
ties of solidarity, and create the opportunity to learn from each
other what cities can and must do to make 21st century one of genuine
and lasting peace. |
